Moving Magnet (MM) cartridges have a replaceable stylus, higher output, and work with any phono preamp — making them ideal for most listeners. Moving Coil (MC) cartridges offer superior detail and transient response due to lower moving mass, but require an MC-compatible phono preamp and are typically higher in price.
How often should I replace my stylus?
Ortofon recommends replacing your stylus after approximately 1,000 hours of playback. A worn stylus can damage your records and degrade sound quality. If you notice increased surface noise, distortion, or the stylus skipping, it may be time for a replacement.

The 2M Premounted comes pre-installed on a headshell, making installation as simple as attaching the headshell to your tonearm. It delivers the same audio quality as the standard 2M Series and is ideal for those who want a hassle-free setup without aligning a cartridge manually.
Do I need a special phono preamp for Moving Coil cartridges?
Yes. Moving Coil cartridges produce a much lower output signal than Moving Magnet cartridges, so they require a phono preamp with an MC input or a dedicated MC step-up transformer. Using an MC cartridge with an MM-only preamp will result in very low volume and poor sound quality.
