Proprietary Engineering

QED Technologies

Each technology QED develops solves a specific measurable problem in signal transmission — resulting in cables that perform demonstrably better, not just marginally.

01

X-Tube™ Plus Technology

Used in QED speaker cables, this hollow tubular conductor design addresses the skin effect by removing conductive material from the centre — where high-frequency current density would otherwise decrease. The result is an even, consistent frequency response across the full audible range, combining X-Tube™ geometry with Aircore™ dielectric.

02

Analoc2™ Plug Design

QED's revolutionary low eddy-current RCA connector eliminates all conductive material from the plug body, replacing it with a thermoplastic support. This removes a significant source of signal distortion found in conventional connectors, delivering measurably superior transparency, timing accuracy, and overall audio integrity.

03

Ferrite Insulation™ Technology

A floating Zn/Mn ferrite jacket surrounds the cable conductors, absorbing high-frequency electromagnetic interference outside the audio band. This technology reduces jitter by approximately 50% versus comparable cables without a ferrite jacket — directly improving clarity, dynamics, and timing in both analogue and digital applications.

04

Airloc™ Forté Cold-Weld Termination

QED's cold-weld banana plug technology creates a permanent metallurgical bond between conductor and plug — no solder, no oxide layer, no resistance creep. By increasing contact area and eliminating the most common point of long-term connection degradation, Airloc™ plugs maintain optimal conductivity for the lifetime of the cable.

05

Glasscore™ Optical Technology

QED Reference optical cables use 210 individual borosilicate glass fibers, providing over 150MHz bandwidth and just 1/10th the attenuation of conventional acrylic fibers. The result is ultra-low jitter digital transmission with loss below 0.03 dB/m — supporting 24-bit/192kHz audio and making Glasscore™ the reference standard for TOSLINK connections.

06

Complementary Conductor Technology™

Applied to QED analogue interconnects and subwoofer cables, this system uses two conductors of different diameters carrying the same audio signal. High-frequency components travel through an alternative pathway, preserving the rhythm, pace, timing, and tonal accuracy of the musical performance with exceptional fidelity.

Customer Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about QED cables, their technologies, and how to find the perfect connection for your system.

What is QED and where are they based?
QED — Quality Every Detail — is a British cable manufacturer founded in 1973 and headquartered in the United Kingdom. For over 50 years, QED has been at the forefront of audio and AV cable design, earning a global reputation for combining rigorous scientific methods with premium craftsmanship. Their products are recognized worldwide by hi-fi enthusiasts, home cinema specialists, and professional installers alike.
What is the difference between the Performance, Reference, and Signature lines?
QED organizes its lineup into three clearly defined tiers:

Performance — Entry to mid-range cables engineered for real-world value. Award-winning technologies like X-Tube™ and Ferrite Insulation™ are built into accessible price points, making this the ideal starting range for a serious hi-fi setup.

Reference — Mid to high-range cables featuring advanced technologies including Glasscore™ borosilicate optical fibers, Analoc2™ low eddy-current connectors, X-Tube™ Plus speaker geometry, and Class I CAT 8.1 Ethernet. A significant step up in resolution and signal transparency.

Signature — QED's flagship range. Cryogenically treated silver-plated conductors, zirconia ceramic connectors, rhodium plating, and Aircore™ hollow-tube geometry place Signature cables in a class of their own as true audio components.
Do cables really make an audible difference to sound quality?
Yes — and QED has 50 years of measurement data to prove it. Cables can introduce jitter, impedance mismatches, electromagnetic interference, eddy current distortion, and skin-effect coloration that degrade both analogue and digital signals. QED's engineering addresses each of these mechanisms with specific, measurable solutions. The consistent verdict from the world's leading hi-fi publications is that QED cables offer "near total transparency that is the mark of an award-winner" — and that transparency is audible.
What cable length do I need?
For most home setups, interconnects (RCA or XLR) are commonly used at 0.6–3 meters, while speaker cables typically run 2–5 meters. For challenging installations — wall-mounted TVs, projector rooms, or multi-room HDMI distribution — the QED Performance Active Optical HDMI cable is available in 30, 40, and 50-meter lengths. The QED Reference Subwoofer 40 cable extends to 50 meters for subwoofers placed at a distance. As a rule: measure your actual distance, add a comfortable buffer for cable routing, and avoid unnecessary coiling of any excess.
Are QED cables compatible with my equipment?
QED cables use industry-standard connectors — RCA, XLR (Neutrik), HDMI 2.1, USB-A/B, TOSLINK, 8P8C Ethernet, and 4mm banana plugs — making them compatible with virtually all hi-fi amplifiers, AV receivers, televisions, DACs, streamers, Blu-ray players, and home cinema systems. HDMI 2.1 cables are also backward compatible with HDMI 2.0 and 1.4 devices, so your cable investment will work seamlessly with both your current and future equipment.
What makes QED HDMI cables better than standard alternatives?
QED engineers beyond the minimum certification spec. The Performance Ultra High Speed 48Gbps HDMI cable carries official HDMI 2.1 certification and uses hybrid optical fiber/copper construction for maximum signal integrity at extended cable lengths. The Performance Active Optical HDMI supports full 8K/60Hz, Dolby Atmos, HDR10+, and eARC over runs of 30–50 meters without requiring external power. All QED HDMI cables use triple electromagnetic shielding, zinc-alloy connectors, and fire-safe halogen-free jackets (EN 50575:2014). Each cable also carries a QR code for authenticity verification.
What is Glasscore™ technology and why should I choose it for optical cables?
Glasscore™ is QED's proprietary optical cable technology found in the Reference Optical Quartz Cable. It uses 210 individual borosilicate glass fibers — each finer than a human hair — to transmit digital audio. Compared to standard acrylic (PMMA) optical cables, Glasscore™ delivers over 150MHz bandwidth (vs. approximately 15MHz for acrylic), 1/10th the signal attenuation, and loss below 0.03 dB/m. This translates directly to lower jitter and support for high-resolution formats up to 24-bit/192kHz — a genuine, measurable upgrade over any standard TOSLINK cable.
Do QED products come with a warranty?
Yes. All QED cables sold through Home Automation Designs include a minimum 2-year manufacturer's warranty, with a lifetime guarantee applicable to select products in the Performance and Reference lines (including the Performance Subwoofer Cable). If you have questions about warranty coverage for a specific product, please contact our team — we're always happy to assist.
How do I choose the right QED cable for my system?
Start by identifying the connection type you need: speaker cable, RCA interconnect, XLR balanced interconnect, HDMI, optical (TOSLINK), USB, subwoofer, or Ethernet. Then choose your product tier based on your budget and the calibre of your existing equipment — your cable quality should generally be proportional to the quality of the components it connects. If you need guidance, our team at Home Automation Designs is here to help you make the perfect match. Contact us anytime for a personalized recommendation.
